About Down

Down is by far the best insulating material.

Down is by far the best insulating material that is used for clothing, bedding, sleeping bags, and furniture. It has a natural ability to provide warmth while wicking away body moisture. Down also offers a variety of density levels, depending on where it’s sourced from, resulting in more or less warmth and allowing you to customize it to your needs. With proper care and maintenance, it can last you a lifetime. Keep reading to learn more about MAPLEDOWN down and feather and discover the many benefits of this natural, renewable and reusable material and how DOWNMARK’s commitment to sustainability ensures that you can enjoy down and feather products for years to come.

Why Choose Down

Warm & Breathable

Down is by far the warmest insulating material available. Each ounce of high-quality down has about 2 million fluffy filaments that interlock and overlap to form a protective layer of still air that keeps warmth in and the cold out. Yet despite being so warm, down has a natural ability to breathe and wick away body moisture and perspiration, constantly keeping the body warm but dry.

Natural & Hypoallergenic

Down gives approximately up to three times the warmth per ounce when compared to synthetics. As a result, far less down is needed by weight than other fillings, which means a much lighter, warmer product. Synthetics also tend to mat and clump together over time, leaving cold empty spots for the cold to penetrate, while down continually molds itself to the body. High-quality downs like our own, are also put through a rigorous cleaning process, which includes special treatments to ensure the down is hypoallergenic and free of any dust mites – the true culprits of most environmental allergies.

Sustainable & Eco-Friendly

Down is a sustainable, eco-friendly material that has been used for thousands of years. It is naturally occurring and compostable, and all by-products from down processing are also biodegradable. Down has the lowest carbon footprint of all insulating materials. In contrast, synthetic fills have a huge carbon footprint. Almost worse is the fact that polyester and related materials never go away,(unless they are incinerated which is a major problem in itself). Sadly, the first polyesters made in the 1940s are still with us today.

Washable & Lifetime Value

When cared for properly, a high-quality down can actually last for generations! You will be able to enjoy your products for many years to come. Down’s natural durability and resilience ensure that it can be washed, dried, and easily fluffed up again back to its original soft, bouncy form. A quality down product will certainly cost more. But it will be warm, cozy, and last for many more years making it a much better long-term choice than it’s cheaper, synthetic counterpart.

Canadian Down:
What’s the difference?

All down were not created equal. You may not know this, but because Canadian geese live in a colder climate, their down is warmer and denser than other downs out there

But we haven’t just chosen to use Canadian down because of its superior quality but all our MAPLEDOWN products are also certified Made in Canada. This means that all aspects of production from sourcing materials to final distribution occur right here in Canada. When everything is produced in locally, we can directly supervise production making sure that there are no shortcuts taken, allowing us to provide a superior product to our clients.

Quality Standards

Downmark Certified

Downmark is the globally recognized symbol of quality issued by the Down Association of Canada, a non-profit organization committed to helping consumers buy genuine down products with confidence. Since our inception in 1976, the association has been the trusted source for information and the only independent group in Canada serving to educate consumers, support the development of the highest quality standards and promote ethical harvesting practices.
